Okay… I wasn’t planning on releasing this to the general public. But you asked, so you shall receive. But first, some context.

A while back there was this bet between me and a group of friends. They were talking about how I could ship anything and make anyone ship anything. And frankly, it’s true. So I told someone to give me a prompt, and I would make them ship it. What did they choose? A rug and a lamp. And lo’ and behold, this is what I gave them:

Okay so you want to hear the story of the the rug and the lamp….

The rug? He was this impulse grab. The family found him out on a street corner and took him in. He was a little raggedy, and he didn’t really fit in with the rest of the decor. And that’s when he found the lamp. And she was such a pampered princess, gilded in gold and made for the high life. She completely looked down on him, because she thought he was just a common urchin. But he got a kick out of ticking her off and started picking on her and how much she cared about her appearance. And of course she would laugh him off and be all “whatever”, but he really enjoyed the time they spent together. And secretly he found comfort in the light she gave off and the warmth she added to the household.

But time went on and the family experienced hard times. Things got worse and worse and they… oh they can’t afford their current living arrangement anymore. A garage sale… oh tragic fate… She’s never lived on the streets before. She’s not made for this kind of life, and ends up with chips in her paint. Spots! Wretched spots! Oh not her precious shady shawl! Stained! But the rug, he’s already tattered and worn. He’s seen this kind of life before and he helps show her how to make it through. It’s hard… she’s never known this kind of life. She hangs onto him as they’re passed from hand to hand, through packing peanuts and cardboard boxes. Eventually, a new couple takes them in. They’re nice folks. The house isn’t anything impressive, but it feels like home… The lady likes the gentle light the lamp gives off and the man appreciates the sturdy rug to set his feet after a long day’s work. Time passes… The lamp misses her old life but… she learns to accept this new…home. Yes, she can call it that now. And the rug is her source of comfort. No matter how dusty she gets, he still sticks by her. He jokes with her. He doesn’t pick on her about her appearance anymore, although he makes no complains when she points out a new stain of his own. She doesn’t understand… how can he be so forgiving? Doesn’t he see she has the same spots? The same smudges? One day she confronts him about it, her bulb flickering sadly. “Why don’t you say something? You know I’m no better than you. I’m…”

“Beautiful” he murmurs. “You’re the most beautiful lamp I’ve ever met.” She can’t speak at first. “But what about the…the dust? My tatters… the chips in my gilding?” He smiles at her “I don’t even notice. It’s not those little things that matter. Your paint could be stripped, your shade torn, and you’d still be the same beautiful lamp I fell in love with all those years ago. It’s the light you give off… the kind way you brighten everyone’s day. That’s your beauty.”

Years come and years go. Winter, spring, summer, fall. Golden years in nature’s sweet repetition. The couple grow old together. She’s an antique now, they say. He an artifact, threadbare. The house musty, smells of “old people”. But he loves her like he did all those years ago… And she him. How could she not? He’s beautiful.

On the Interceptor, everything is powered by the green energy, right? And subsequently just about everything I’ve seen on the ship that’s not white black or grey is some shade of green. Green buttons. Green lights. Green hologram projectors….

But there is SOMETHING that is not.

And it is RED.

It’s that LITTLE, RED, CIRCLE towards the back of the bridge.

WHAT IS IT.

It’s sitting above the door. Is it a red, glowy, alien “exit” sign?
